Your privacy

Last updated: 2 October 2026

Moonward is a free Moon guide operated by Karan Tahiliani in India and available to visitors worldwide. You can use it without creating an account. This notice covers the current guide, its place search, analytics and contact emails. It explains what information is used, why it is used and the choices you have.

At a glance

When you search for a place

After you type at least three characters and pause, partial search text is sent for place suggestions. Suggestions are cached for up to one day and are not recorded in our usage analytics. When you press Find, the city, town or postal code you type is sent to our website’s backend on Cloudflare. When we do not already have a saved result, we send that search to Geoapify to find matching places and time zones. We do not forward your device coordinates or your browser’s IP address to Geoapify in this lookup.

We may cache the search text and matching place information on Cloudflare for up to 30 days so repeated searches are faster. Searches with no results may be cached for five minutes. These shared cached results are not tied to a visitor account or IP address. Please search for a town or postal code rather than entering private information.

When you use your device location

Your browser asks your permission first. Moonward uses the coordinates to calculate the Moon’s position on your device. Moonward’s code does not send those coordinates to our backend, Geoapify or analytics, or put them in share links. Your browser or operating system may use its own location services to find your position.

You can refuse location permission and search for a place instead. You can also withdraw permission in your browser’s site settings. Coordinates are used in the current tab and are not saved between visits.

Remembering a searched place

Remembering a place is optional and off by default. After choosing a search result, you can check “Remember this searched place for 30 days.” This saves the selected place, its coordinates, time zone and search text in this browser’s local storage so the guide can reopen there. It is not synced between devices. Uncheck the box to delete the saved place. Choosing another place clears the previous saved choice; remembering the new one requires another opt-in.

After 30 days, Moonward no longer restores the saved place and removes it the next time the site opens. You can delete it sooner by clearing Moonward’s site data. Device-location coordinates are never saved by this feature. The updated site also removes places automatically saved by older versions when it next opens.

When you search and choose a result, the page address may contain the search text and that place’s coordinates. Anyone you share that link with can see them. They may also appear in browser history and requests to our hosting provider. Device-location coordinates are excluded from these links.

Visits and performance

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand page views, visits, referring websites, countries, browsers, device types and loading performance. This helps us find problems and improve the site. It does not give us visitors’ names or email addresses.

Cloudflare says its Web Analytics service does not use cookies or local storage to track visitors, does not fingerprint visitors, and does not log URL query strings. Our custom usage events do not include free-form search text, device coordinates or email addresses. The separate Web Analytics script processes page and connection information under Cloudflare’s practices. Cloudflare shows us up to six months of these measurements. Its own connection and security logs follow Cloudflare’s policies. See Cloudflare’s analytics privacy information.

Search and slider usage

We also use Cloudflare Analytics Engine to count Find-button activations, submitted searches, search outcomes (including no matches and errors), time-range choices, completed slider adjustments and returns to the current time. Search results reached through shared links may also contribute to outcome counts. These counts help us understand which features work and where searches fail.

Postal-area statistics may include the full numeric postal code, such as an Indian PIN or US ZIP. Canadian codes are shortened to the first three characters, UK codes to their outward part, Dutch codes to four digits, and US ZIP+4 codes to five digits. We do not store free-form city or address text in these events. The country describes the searched place, not the visitor.

These events have timestamps but no visitor identifiers, IP addresses, precise device coordinates or browser fingerprints. Cloudflare documents a three-month retention period for Analytics Engine records. When your browser signals Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, Moonward does not load Cloudflare Web Analytics and skips its custom usage events, including server-side search outcome counts. Searches and their shared cache still work. Counts can include automated requests and repeated use, so they are not unique-person counts.

Hosting, security and website files

Cloudflare serves the website and processes ordinary connection information, such as your IP address and request details. Our search and custom-event rate limiters use your IP address to limit excessive requests over 60-second counting windows. A counting window is not a guarantee that Cloudflare deletes related connection or security records after 60 seconds. We do not include IP addresses in our search cache or custom usage-event records, and we do not maintain a visitor database. Cloudflare’s infrastructure handles connection and rate-limiting data under its own policies.

Fonts, the Moon image and astronomy code are served with Moonward through Cloudflare. Your browser does not need to contact Google Fonts to display the site. Moon calculations run in your browser.

Our providers may process data in countries other than yours. Their processing can differ from the periods stated for our search cache and event records. More information is available in their privacy documentation: Cloudflare and Geoapify.

Why we use information

Where applicable data-protection law requires a lawful basis, we assess each use separately. For this current guide, the bases are:

Contact and privacy requests

For suggestions, questions or privacy requests, email Karan Tahiliani at hello@moonward.in.

When you email us, we receive your email address, any name you provide, your message, attachments and normal email metadata. We use this information to respond and handle your request. Email is hosted by Zoho Mail; see Zoho’s privacy policy. We do not add you to a marketing list when you contact us.

We retain correspondence while it is needed to resolve and follow up on your enquiry, document the response to a privacy request, or meet applicable legal obligations. You can ask us to delete correspondence that is no longer needed. Please avoid sending passwords, identity documents or other sensitive information unless we specifically explain why it is necessary.

Depending on the law that applies to your information, you may have rights to access, correct or delete it, restrict or object to its use, withdraw consent where processing relies on consent, or complain to the relevant data-protection authority. Applicable exceptions and procedures vary. We do not attach visitor identifiers to our custom event records, so we may not be able to identify which records relate to you from an email address alone.

Offline use and home-screen installation

The offline guide stores public app files such as fonts, Moon imagery and calculation code in your browser cache. Search requests, analytics events and device coordinates are not stored by this offline cache. Remembering a searched place remains a separate optional choice. Clear this site’s data in your browser to remove offline files and any remembered place.
